Recent Work

current role

In my current role, I am the head of human centered design for a digital agency that designs impactful solutions for government, tribal, healthcare, association, and private sector clients.

  • Grew the HCD team from the ground up—Went from sole UX designer to building, leading, and mentoring a diverse, hybrid team

  • Proven business impact—Contributed to winning key contracts with new clients and growing scope and winning new projects and work from existing clients

  • Raised the level of design—Established the HCD practice as a key differentiator for the agency while working to document and standardize practices

  • Work collaboratively to establish partnerships—Internally and externally, with clients, designers, developers, project managers, sales team, and contractors

  • Wear multiple hats to serve the business—Balance team leadership, company leadership, business development, and direct client work

Composite image of components and styles from the NCBI component library, including typography, colors, layout grids, and a sampling of components including heroes, cards, and buttons.

National Institutes of Health

I am both an Individual Contributor and leader of a team of designers on multiple projects and teams at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at NIH.

  • More than doubled size of AgencyQ team at NCBI

  • Established and manage a component library and design system to standardize design, improve user experience, and ensure accessibility across teams at NCBI

  • Redesigned complex workflows including a researcher profile system for grant applicants, submission portals for scientists, and secured-access databases for researchers

  • Facilitated design sprints for multiple teams to jump-start the design process for solving sticky problems

  • Redesigned websites that provide access to genomic data to millions of yearly visitors, from students to researchers to policy makers

Sun and Sky app—Indian Health Service

Partnered with a tribal Youth Resource Treatment Center and the Indian Health Service to design an app to improve outcomes and increase engagement for adolescents in a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) aftercare program.

  • Designed and conducted a robust discovery that allowed us to better understand the challenges faced by the adolescents, their families, and their treatment providers

  • Worked collaboratively with the treatment center to design an app that would help support youth in their recovery journey, giving them tools to manage their own recovery process—while also giving staff better visibility into each individual’s engagement level, moods, successes, and challenges

  • Hired Native American designers to ensure that designs were culturally appropriate and reflected specific tribes and regions

  • An additional treatment center has signed on to use the app.. Stakeholders are working to expand the use of the app to additional treatment centers

Person using the app, screen shows graphics with points earned and days of sobriety with 4-month sobriety coin earned.

Persona of Susan, a mid-career nurse practitioner

Pri-Med, Continuing Medical Education

Designed a web-based training platform to enable primary care practitioners to level up and expand their skills in a self-paced platform that works around their busy schedules.

  • The platform started with a program for new Nurse Practitioners and Physician Associates

  • In the first year, the platform enrolled 400 users into its first bootcamp. And the website won awards from the Daveys and W3 Awards

  • With the success of the initial bootcamp, Pri-Med has launched 2 additional bootcamps

  • Additional projects for Pri-Med have included developing personas and KPIs for personalization on their main website

JK Moving

Designed two web-based apps for JK Moving, a home-grown but global leader in the relocation and logistics space with a focus on what matters most to their customers

  • Designed a commercial customer care portal that allows commercial customers to manage and track multiple moves. Created a component library and style guide with light and dark modes based on the MUI design library, making implementation efficient

  • Having established the component library and style guide, scaling up to build new apps became fast and easy. JK Moving asked us to design and build a second app, and there are plans for more

  • Designed a residential customer app that allows busy customers to self-serve the whole process, if desired, in the app—from requesting a quote, to managing move details, to paying invoices. The app allows JK Moving to better meet the needs of its customers while reducing demand on customer service staff and increasing revenue by simplifying the process and promoting additional services
